Blackjack for newbies

Blackjack is one of the most popular casino table games and if played properly can have a house edge that is less than 1%.

This game is quite unique in a sense that unlike other popular games such as roulette and craps, the decisions that Blackjack players make  have a huge outcome on the house edge. In the case of Roulette, the house edge is generally 5.26% and each spin of the wheel, that contains 38 numbers in all, is an individual event. Similarly in craps, there can be only 36 different ways the dice will be shown. Hence, every single dice roll becomes an independent event in itself.

On the contrary, Blackjack is a game that relies on dependent events rather than independent ones. This in essence implies that once a card is dealt, the makeup of the remaining cards in the deck will change. The player is favored when there are big cards in the deck and the dealer is favored when there are small cards in the deck. This makes the game truly exciting because the advantage of the game oscillates continuously from the dealer to the player. The strategy of card counting has its base in this fact. A person who counts the cards will naturally bet more money when the advantage is with the player and less when the advantage is with the dealer.

Since a dealer must follow a certain set of rules during play, a strategy that is mathematically correct can be used to ensure optimum play. Such a mathematical strategy is called the ‘basic strategy”. The player can choose his course of action depending on the exposed card of the dealer- stand, double, hit and split, to make sure he gets the best chance of having a winning hand.

The overall objective for Blackjack players is to ensure that the dealer does not get near twenty one. Since the rule is that the player must play first, it can sometimes come to the player’s advantage if he decides to stand on a hand that possesses a probability of going above twenty one when the dealer has a card that might bust him. However, if both the dealer and the player go bust, the player is the one that loses the hand. Hence it is of paramount importance that any Blackjack player should learn to correctly play his hand to ensure the best outcome is derived from a mathematically correct strategy.

Nowadays, thanks to the growth and widespread use of the internet, playing Blackjack in brick and mortar casinos is not the only option available to Blackjack enthusiasts. Several online casinos have cropped up on the World Wide Web that offer players free and informal enjoyment of the beautiful game. Playing Blackjack online is also suitable for amateurs who want to hone their skills in ‘trial games’ using ‘virtual money’ before diving headfirst into the big world of betting. There are several other benefits such as better bonuses and favorable odds that come with online Blackjack.

In conclusion, Blackjack is an extremely fun filled game that also comes with a house advantage that is low. Learning to play properly is not by any means difficult. For the needy, most casinos offer a small strategy chart to players that can be used for reference during play. However, with some little effort on the part of the player, making the right decisions without consulting the strategy chart is very much possible.
